On The Ball

A lively, hilarious, team-building activity set in the giddy world of Premier League football. Players to buy and sell, matches to prepare for, crowds to attract, owners to keep sweet – On The Ball is a great, fun way of improving your decision-making and communication skills. The clubs – high-achievers Pilchester Rovers, mid-table stalwarts Dunning United, recently-promoted Treethorpe Academicals, etc. – are fictional so there is no clash of loyalties but all are looking for glory. Knowing a bit about football helps but is by no means required. And, yes, in On The Ball, women make an equal contribution, both on and off the pitch.

If your star player is underperforming, you can try and offload him and buy a replacement. If an embarrassing story about your goalkeeper is about to appear in the tabloids, you may need to hire a PR Guru to limit the damage this causes. The event provides plenty for everyone to do and plenty of ways to get involved.

Our professional actor/facilitators play some of the key characters and help people understand what’s going on – but most of the fun is created by you. Your club will only prosper if all of you talk to lots of other people, plan carefully, amuse each other, negotiate well and bluff like your lives depend on it.

The match results are decided in a thrilling finale – but coming top of our “league table” requires more than just winning a few games. As in the real world, money plays a vital part, too. So who will the winners be? “The Pilkos” (Pilchester)? “The Dunkeys” (Dunning)? “The Treetops” (Treethorpe)? Or one of the other proud battlers? At the end of the day, it’s all down to giving it 150 percent, knowing it’s a game of two halves and playing your socks off both on and off the pitch. On The Ball concludes with us presenting the victors with some (edible) champions’ medals. But this activity is one in which everyone really does end up a winner – energised, motivated, entertained and fit for anything…
